GROWING SECTIONALISM

What is sectionalism? Sectionalism is defined as loyalty to one's own region or section of the country, rather than to the country as a whole. This was very significant in the 1800s, and many of the divides were between the north and south.

JACKSONIAN DEMOCRACY

In the 1830s there was a movement called the Jacksonian Democracy, this movement was attempting to gain more democracy in the American government. They wanted to do this by expanding voting rights and American opportunities, but at what cost?

MANIFEST DESTINY

In the 19th century, there was a cultural belief called Manifest Destiny. People believed that the advocates of it were destined to expand and spread democracy across North America.

THE CIVIL WAR

The American Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865. This war was fought between the North and South states, some of the main causes being slavery and westward expansion.

RECONSTRUCTION

After the Civil War, around 1863 to 1877 there was something called the Reconstruction. The purpose of this was to establish and protect the new laws about slavery while helping the south to become a part of the union again.
